The Omron BF508 provides Body Mass Index (BMI), a measure for assessing a person’s body weight. Since being overweight is a growing global problem, the body mass index is used above all to point out the associated risk.
However, the BMI gives only a rough guide value and it is disputed since it does not take into account a person’s build or the composition of the body weight in terms of fat and muscle tissue, which can vary by individual. Bio-electric impedance (BIA) is a measurement method used to determine a person’s fluid balance. To do this, a weak, safe alternating current is passed through the body and the resistance that the body shows to this current is measured. Since body fat contains less water than muscle mass, a statement may be made about the body mass distribution on the basis of the resistance measured.
In it’s technical implementation, this measurement procedure is far more complex than this simple explanation. Omron supplies body composition monitors with hand and foot electrodes – the most accurate in their class.
